Summer Academy, Santa Fe Campus

Important Information for Students & Families

Traveling to our Santa Fe, New Mexico Campus

Those who are flying should fly into either the Albuquerque International Sunport(ABQ): 60 minutes from campus, or the Santa Fe Municipal Airport (SAF): 25 minutes from campus. Many more carriers fly into the Albuquerque airport and airfare to ABQ may be cheaper.

For the Albuquerque airport (ABQ): Groome Transportation offers a limited number of shuttles from the Albuquerque Airport to our Santa Fe campus for under $50 per student/one-way. Shuttles run every 2.5 hours, starting at 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., 7 days a week. Ideally, students will be on the shuttle leaving the Albuquerque airport, headed to campus, no later than 2 p.m. on Sunday. On Saturdays, students will need to check out of their rooms by 10 a.m. taking a shuttle no later than 12 p.m./noon to the airport. Please book a Shuttle ASAP on if you need transportation to and from the Albuquerque airport; they have a limited capacity and fill up quickly.

For the Santa Fe airport (SAF): It is a 20 minute ride from the Santa Fe airport to campus. Uber/Lyft are available for students to coordinate their own transportation to campus if they are comfortable taking this ride-share service alone. New Mexico Black Car is a local service that rides can also be scheduled through; they will pick up as far as Albuquerque but are on the higher end for transportation cost.

Sunday Arrivals, Registration, Friday departure, and farewell brunch

Registration will be held between 1–4 p.m. on Sundays on campus. Exact location for registration will be confirmed closer to the start of camp via email. Parking will be available in the visitor parking lot. A map of campus can be located on the St John’s website. Parents/guardians and/or guests are not allowed to accompany the Summer Academy student to their rooms for health and safety reasons; thus, Summer Academy Resident Assistants will be present at checkin to help with luggage and get students settled in their rooms.

Early/Late Arrivals Summer Academy staff are unable to accommodate early arrivals. If your student needs to arrive a few hours before registration, Peterson Student Center will be open for them to wait. We recommend students provide their own meals and snacks if they arrive early; our campus is not within walking distance of any restaurants and the dining hall/coffee shop has limited summer and weekend hours. If your student plans to arrive before Sunday, the international hostel in Santa Fe will allow guests under the age of 18 to book a room and we also have a . We cannot offer accommodations on campus before Sunday. The first Seminar begins at 7 p.m. on Sunday night; if you expect your student to arrive later than 7 p.m., please coordinate your student’s arrival time with the Summer Academy Director: summer.academy(at)sjc.edu.

Friday Departure and Farewell Brunch: Each session of the Summer Academy ends on Friday afternoon. Families picking up their students are invited to join us for the farewell brunch starting at 11 a.m. Students must vacate their dorm rooms by 12 p.m. on Friday. Families are welcome to stay on campus and participate in a campus tour or other public activities hosted by the college. Supervision for the students will not be provided after 12 p.m. unless they are staying for the weekend. Please check the schedule to see if there is a Friday morning class when planning travel, we recommend giving 1.5 hours to get to the ABQ airport and 45 minutes to the SF airport. Please see details above about travel and transportation.

ABQ Airport Shuttles: Groome Transportation can pick up as early at 4:30 a.m. Schedule a ride using the link above. SAF Airport does not provide shuttles, we recommend Uber/Lyft. Please pre-schedule your ride on the Uber/Lyft app; we are in a small town and pre-scheduling a ride will allow the driver and you to have a 30-45 min window. New Mexico Black Car is a local suggested transportation company in Santa Fe that will transport to any airport at any time.

Early/Late Departures Please coordinate early departures with the Director by emailing summer.academy(at)sjc.edu. Discounts or pro-rated tuition will not be offered to those who must depart early from Summer Academy. All students must depart summer academy and be off campus by 12 p.m. If students have late flights or departure plans are delayed, the international hostel in Santa Fe will allow guests under the age of 18 to book a room. We also have a .

Stayover Weekend Supervision

If your student stays on campus for a stayover weekend there is a $200 fee. If your student is staying over the weekend, they can choose to attend an off-campus day trip planned by the Outdoor Program with St. John’s College. They will provide weekend supervision and activities (i.e. hiking, swimming, bowling, or visiting a museum). Students will have time to do laundry upon their return and prepare for the next week; emergency services and public safety will be available, but the camp nurse will not be available. Please see the self-administered medication form in Campdoc if your student takes prescribed medication.

We recommend sending your student with spending money if they might need it, but the $200 fee will cover the activity and cost of meals. If your student chooses not to attend the Outdoor Program trip, they will not be allowed to leave campus and they will be supervised by a staff member. Activities may not be available for those who stay behind, and the dining hall will have limited hours. No students are allowed to stay on campus the last Friday or Saturday of our three-week program.

Living Accommodations

Summer Academy students will live in the residential halls on campus. Depending on availability, students can live in single and double dorm rooms with a Summer Academy RA assigned to each floor. Each floor will have a community bathroom; there are non-gendered bathrooms available as well. High Altitude & Hydration

St. John’s College in Santa Fe is located in a high desert climate at 7,300 feet above sea level. The air is drier and the sun is stronger here compared to most places. The best precautions are extra sun protection and drinking at least three liters of water everyday starting a couple days before traveling to Santa Fe.

Dining

Meals are provided by SAGE Dining, our campus food service provider. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be provided daily in the campus Dining Hall or by catering service. SAGE provides a variety of cuisines, including vegetarian and vegan options. However, because they operate a commercial kitchen that serves hundreds of people buffet-style each day, not all dietary restrictions can be accommodated. In regards to allergens and religious practices, cross-contamination is always possible.

Class Preparation

Students are expected to read all class materials before they arrive, and there will be some free time during the week to do second readings. Because classes are discussion-based, the success of a conversation requires that all students are well-prepared and engaged. Students are not expected to purchase or otherwise acquire the reading materials on their own. Readings will be compiled into a single document and will be available for download in June. There is no need to print them; hard copies of all readings will be provided to students upon arrival.

Students who would like to request accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act or Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act will need to submit the Disabilities Registration Form to the Executive Director of Campus Wellness of St. John’s College. Please email santafe.academy(at)sjc.edu for further instructions.

Supervision and Resources

College faculty members work with students in the classroom and the college’s professional administrative staff organizes and manages extra-curricular activities. Undergraduate Resident Assistants supervise Summer Academy participants and are responsible for supervision of Summer Academy participants. Campus Security are on duty 24 hours. All Resident Assistants are CPR/AED certified. Lastly, a camp nurse is available to Summer Academy students Monday–Friday 8 a.m.–4 p.m.
