Seminar Texts and Course Syllabi

Seminar text edition information is listed below each seminar description in the catalog. Your course syllabus, detailing text editions and an outline for day-to-day course discussion, is available through the Materials Hub site. If your course includes supplemental readings or a course manual, these documents will be available through the Materials Hub. The registrants-only web link to the Materials Hub is included in your registration confirmation email and will be shared in monthly e-newsletters (scheduled for April, May, June, and July). Materials Hub information will be updated on a rolling basis. If you need the Materials Hub link resent to you, please email classics(at)sjc.edu.

For the best personal seminar experience, you are strongly encouraged to use the recommended text edition and translation as listed on the syllabus and seminar catalog.

We invite you to visit the to purchase your seminar texts. We understand you have many choices for book purchases, and your support is appreciated.

Multi-seminar registrants are provided their course texts free of charge. Book distribution for multi-seminar registrants begins in March 2024. Those who qualify will be contacted by email in advance to arrange for shipping. This complimentary service is available only if you register for multiple seminars before June 17, 2024. This deadline ensures that your books will arrive with enough time for you to read them before your first seminar, and also helps to account for unforeseeable shipping delays. These books will be shipped by the St. John’s College bookstore in Santa Fe.

Single-seminar participants for whom obtaining the text is a financial hardship are welcome to contact classics(at)sjc.edu for assistance.

Learning Through Conversation

Those who are new to a St. John’s College seminar—online or in-person—are invited to read this introduction to the seminar method: Learning Through Conversation.

Please note that although this document addresses the in-person format, it is equally applicable for an online seminar. (Online St. John’s College seminars are, in their essence, the same format as in-person seminars.)

Resources for Online Participants

The Zoom Guide for Seminar Participants contains technical instructions as well as helpful hints for participating in a St. John’s College seminar hosted on the Zoom platform.

Three separate Zoom invitations will be emailed to you prior to the start of your seminar at the following intervals: three weeks, one week, and the day before. Online seminars are two hours long, and their schedules are listed in both Mountain Time and Eastern Time.

You will be given three weeks’ advance notice if any additional (optional) events or meetings are added to the schedule. Previous years' programs have included online lectures, social hours, a class meeting on the Sunday afternoon prior to the start of the seminar week, and practice Zoom seminars on a short classics text.

Resources for In-Person Participants

In-person seminars during the weeks of July 8–12, July 15–19, and July 22–26 are hosted on St. John’s College’s campus in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The campus address is 1160 Camino de Cruz Blanca, Santa Fe, NM 87505. Once you arrive, please reference our campus map.

On the Sunday before each in-person seminar, we host an on-campus registration and welcome event, where you can meet tutors and fellow participants in a social setting.

Weekly Schedule

In-person participants can choose one or two seminars a week to dive deeply into study. If you are enrolled in one seminar in the morning or one in the afternoon, your free time can be spent re-reading the assigned text for the next day’s seminar or exploring the city and mountains of Santa Fe—as well as our beautiful campus. If you are enrolled in two seminars, your mornings and afternoons will be spent in class. By signing up for the Science Institute, you will automatically be enrolled in a morning and afternoon seminar.

In-person seminars are two hours long, with the exception of Science Institute seminars, which meet twice daily for two hours each. Schedules are listed in Mountain Daylight Time. Morning classes run from 10 a.m. to noon MDT, and afternoon classes are 2 to 4 p.m. MDT. Lunch is provided on campus for all participants between noon and 1:30 p.m. MDT.
