His first teaching position was as a tutor in the Great Books program at St. John鈥檚 College in Annapolis (1955鈥57). During this period he contributed translations of Aeschylus,The Suppliant Maidens, and The Persians to the Chicago University Press鈥檚 series of 鈥淭he Complete Greek Tragedies,鈥 edited by David Grene and Richmond Lattimore.
Bernardete shows how music – in the broadest sense, including drama, epic poetry, and even puppetry – mediates between reason and the city in Plato’s philosophy of law. Most broadly, however, Benardete here uncovers the concealed ontological dimension of the Laws, explaining why it is concealed and how it comes to light.
